I'm struck by two things:<BR/><BR/>1) I wasn't as cheery as you.<BR/>2) I really haven't changed much.<BR/><BR/> The School Bus<BR/><BR/>At 6:15 I leave the cold and take my usual seat, roughly in the middle of the bus. The seats, although many ripped and written on, are comfortable enough. They are soft and quite warm from the four heaters stationed about the sides of the bus. As I sit back and prepare myself for the day, I am aware of many things going on around me. There are seventeen other kids sharing the ride with me, which is provided by a very tired looking bus driver. His hat reads “Mud Racing”, and his face is unshaven. He drives in silence, and does not offer any morning greetings to the kids who enter. <BR/><BR/>There is a boy in the seat in front of me listening to a Walkman, listening to “The Police”, who are whispering a song to the passengers around him. A group of red heads are talking about their busy schedules for the day behind me, and two boys beside me are already making weekend plans. The rest of the passengers sit in silence, shaking the morning cobwebs out, and thinking of the day. I look down at the floor of the bus, and the first thought that crosses my mind is that I would not like to sit there. It is wet and very muddy from boots, and there is even some snow wedged in the grooves of the rubber mat that runs from the front to the back of the bus. The window by my seat is dirty, and cold to the touch. The walls a light green, and rust-chipped and faded. On the ceiling are two rows of lights some lit, and some not. There are emergency windows and an emergency door in the back. Such a cynical, fear and bigotry-based campaign straight out of the Rove handbook. And it backfired! Double awesome. <BR/><BR/>This election proves that the old ways are withering away like the evil pinched face of Dole. And our global likability instantly shoots up.
